The summer season may well be over in mainland Spain. But the Canaries are just gearing up for their peak holiday season. As these seven Spanish islands located off the coast of Africa are the closest winter sun destination to Northern Europe. Offering great value breaks with the guarantee of decent weather.
As a result of this clement year round climate the Canaries have become the second most visited region in Spain (Catalonia, with the attraction of Barcelona tops the charts). Welcoming millions of guests every year. Each island is unique however with its own microclimate and attractions – and Lanzarote, the most easterly of the islands is particularly popular with tourists from Germany, Eire and the UK.
Thousands of holidaymakers will be booking Lanzarote holidays over the coming weeks – despite the current gloomy economic climate. So what can they expect from their winter break in the Canaries?
In terms of weather Lanzarote offers temperatures in excess of 20 Celsius even during December and January. With very little rainfall and plenty of sunshine hours – as the sun doesn’t set here until 6pm. As is the case on may other Canary Islands the south enjoys a better climate than the north. Making the resort of Playa Blanca the most popular winter sun choice. Followed by Puerto del Carmen.
The cost of flights to Lanzarote will also be at their lowest this winter for many years. Thanks to the fact that this route has become very competitive over recent months. Ryanair has added 15 new services to Lanzarote alone, whilst other low cost specialists such as easyJet and Monarch also operate regular flights to Lanzarote from all major UK airports. Prices currently start from as little as £100 return and the flight time is just four hours.
All types of accommodation are available on the island. Playa Blanca plays host to the biggest selection of four star hotels on the island. As well as a decent range of luxurious villas. Whilst Puerto del Carmen offers a wide choice of Lanzarote apartments. With the highest concentration of complexes on the island.
Lanzarote also offers loads for visitors to see and do should the weather turn inclement. Such as the awe inspiring Timanfaya Volcano Park and the many creations of the island born artist César Manrique. Car hire in Lanzarote is cheap and petrol affordable – so it’s easy to get out and tour the island and explore Lanzarote´s many unique attractions.
