The small Canary Island of Lanzarote has been welcoming holidaymakers for over forty years. Establishing itself as a hugely popular destination amongst British and German tourists. Attracting around 1.5 million arrivals during the course of 2008 alone. Many of whom return for at least a second visit.
Year Round Sunshine
The reasons for this small islands popularity are relatively easy to discern. As Lanzarote enjoys great weather all year round. And at just four hours flying time from the UK it is the closest genuine winter sun destination within Europe per se. Although in reality it lies much closer to the continent of Africa – which is located just some 80km away.
Volcanic Vistas
Lanzarote also offers visitors a wide range of choice when it comes to things to do. As the island boasts a great deal of natural – if unconventional beauty. A legacy of a volcanic past, which has covered around one quarter of Lanzarote in lava. Creating 300 odd volcanoes in its wake.
Hail Cesar
A locally born artist called Cesar Manrique so adored Lanzarote´s terrain that he fought to ensure that it remained well protected from the ravages of mass market tourism. Securing a ban on all high rise buildings. And creating ecologically friendly tourist attractions which enhanced, rather than destroyed, these vistas.
Costa Teguise
When it comes to booking accommodation one of the best hotels in Lanzarote, the Gran Melia Salinas, is located in Costa Teguise. One of three main resorts on the island.
The Gran Melia was in fact partially designed by Manrique – and first opened its doors during the 1970´s. Helping to attract a number of high profile VIP guests to the island, such as Peter Sellers and Omar Sharif. This five star establishment is still very popular today, thanks to its enviable beach front location and luxurious facilities.
Playa Blanca
Since tourism first took off on the island self catering holidays have also grown enormously in popularity. Offering tourists reasonably priced breaks in the sun. The largest selection of holiday villas in Lanzarote are located in Playa Blanca. The newest resort, located in the south of the island.
Thanks to the fact that many overseas investors have snapped up rental properties here there is a large selection of villas in Playa Blanca to choose from. With prices starting from as little as £400 per week. For a two bedroom villa with private pool.
