The small Canary Island of Lanzarote has long been a big favourite with British holidaymakers. Attracting over 800,000 visitors from the UK during the course of 2008 alone. And despite the current economic outlook and the recent decline of sterling against the euro many consumers are still clearly reluctant to surrender their holidays on the Island of Fire this year. With the Monarch travel group recently reporting a 13% upswing in bookings for holidays in Lanzarote during the course of January.
Despite the fact that Lanzarote is located just seventy miles off the coast of West Africa and is four hours flying time from the UK it is still possible to create a good value break on the island for as little as £200 per person.
The island is serviced by a number of leading low cost operators, such as easyJet and Monarch. Which means that flights to Lanzarote are available from as little as £100 return during the winter months. Rising to an average of around £200 at other times of the year.
As you’d expect from a holiday destination that welcomes over 1.5 million foreign tourists annually there’s no shortage of high quality, good value accommodation available on Lanzarote too.
Those in search of a reasonably priced villa holiday should focus on the island’s newest resort of Playa Blanca, located just 6km across the Bocaina Straits from near neighbour Fuerteventura. Which enjoys the best microclimate on the island. And where it is possible to pick up a weeks accommodation in a two bedroom private villa with pool from as little as £350 per week.
Whilst the island’s oldest resort of Puerto del Carmen offers the best selection of good value holiday apartments. Such as the centrally located and well appointed Plaza Palmeras complex. Which is just five minutes stroll from the main beach at Playa Grande. And which also boasts excellent on site facilities. Prices for a week stay here start from £170 per week.
Lanzarote boasts a number of impressive tourist attractions. Such as the Timanfaya Volcano Park, the Green Lagoon and the Jameos del Agua. Most of which were developed under the aegis of the island born artist and architect Cesar Manrique.
Thankfully, it’s easy to get around as Lanzarote only measures some 54km by 38km. And car hire is extremely affordable too – with prices starting from as little as €20 per day. With petrol much cheaper than in the UK – at around €0.80 per litre.
