Hi Ruth,
The small places are often more romantic.

Also, a friend visited a little while ago and was staying in a hotel
in Puerto de la Cruz.
I was invited for dinner. It was a buffet served in a large room.
My friend said:” Oh no, I don’t want that. I want to be served by a waiter and don’t like self service when on holiday!”

We then went to a lovely small place RestauranteLos Gemelos near the hotel with fantastic food and service.
My friend was especially taken with the wine.
As he was from mainland Spain he couldn’t believe it at first that Tenerife also has good wines.

Unfortunately All Inclusive resorts are a threat to restaurants and bars in the vicinities however in my opinion they are good value for money especially in touristic areas where food and drinks are relatively very expensive. This is also a big drawback of competition, where resorts and hotels always try to attract tourists by offering them a better price and service than the others nearby.

I still sometimes prefer small traditional restaurants during my stay

It is amazing that 4 and 5 star hotels offer so much extras, nowadays.

They do it in Tenerife as well.
Food quality in hotels is up. Free alcohol…
The same which you report.
But, you know what bugs me?
They are killing all the little restaurants around them.
