This is a great Tuscan attraction not to be missed near the town of Borgo a Mozzano – the Devil’s Bridge or il Ponte della Maddalena. The devil’s bridge is found on the river Serchio near Borgo a Mozzano along the road SS12. This bridge connects the two banks of the river Serchio at the height of Borgo a Mozzano. It was constructed in the era of the Countess Matilde di Canossa (1046-1115). The shape of this medieval devil’s bridge is a classic one, with its asymetric arches. The bridge is known as the ‘Devil’s Bridge’ due to a legend associated with it. A master mason started building the bridge however he noticed that he could not complete it on a fixed date. So, with fear of the possible consequences he asked the Devil to help him. The devil accepted to complete the bridge in one night in return for the spirit of the first that will cross the bridge. The people of the village were stunned by the great work. The mason ordered the people not to cross the bridge before sunset. In the meantime he went to Lucca to ask the Bishop for advice on the contract he made with the devil. The bishop advised him to let cross the bridge for the first time a pig. This was done and the devil was so furious that he was defeated that he threw himself in the Serchio river, and since then has never been seen.
