If travelling alone when going abroad, you can go for the option of renting a car instead of using the local public transport. However, you want to make sure that you will not have any surprises when arriving to pick up the car at the airport or at any other pick up place.

Some of these surprises may be: different car type from the one you have booked, higher cost price than quoted online, etc etc. Everyone would like to avoid these surprises in order to have a pleasurable holiday with the minimum problems possible. Again, when looking for a car rental company, one is spoilt for choice due to high competition on the market. One can find the large car rental companies like Hertz, Avis, Europcar and National amongst others and then there are third party companies who can quote prices of different large rental companies so that you can compare and choose the best price for the car you want to rent. Try to look for reliable and renowned companies before booking. Surely you do not want to go to pick up your car and the customer representatitve tells you that no booking exists in your name! Sounds funny.. but it is true!

To share my experiences with you I have been fooled once by a third party rental company. Obviously I will not mention names here but while browsing the internet to book a car for 1 day, I was attracted by a particular online quote which was nearly half the price of the others. Well, trying to save something, I booked with that company and when we arrived at the airport to pick our car, the invoice was double the price which was quoted on the internet. Obviously we complained why all that discrepancy… the answer? they told us that the price at which we booked online had the word ‘APPROXIMATELY’ before the figure and unfortunately we had to pay. I don’t thin this is fair for the customer and that’s why I wanted a reliable company that has no hidden charges in its quotes online.. and we found it.

These last two years we have been hiring our car from AutoEurope. This company has both manual and automatic car hire. We have rented compact cars and also luxury cars, where we booked a particular model and even though we were not guaranteed that we will have it, our wish was always granted. So in my opinion they have everything a customer wants: good variety, great prices and excellent customer service.

I want to include here a local car hire company which operates only in the United Kindgom. They are 1car1 and we rent our cars with them when we’re travelling to any part of the United Kindgom and we were always offered great service and excellent prices on their fleets.
